The Saga of an average Australian...and a wrecked ship......
Gidday! I am Adrian, a married man with one teenage son named David. I was born in Holland in 1948 and moved to Australia with my parents when I was four years old. My ambition in life is to enjoy myself, and not let the troubles of the world get to me. I love to get away from the rat race of the city and take my four wheel drive vehicle into the Bush and onto the beach, exploring old tracks, and Camping wherever I want to. You can see some photographs of my bush travels on this site, using the Links below.
I love anything to do with the outdoors, fishing, and Bush walking, looking for gemstones and fossils etc. I also have many pictures of the wreck of the CargoVessel 'Cherry Venture." On the Links below, you can see a photographic history of the gradual destruction of the wreck, from 1973 to the present time.
I also like to play around on my computer, exploring the Internet looking for interesting topics etc.
Remember!
Happiness is contagious.
.... please be a carrier.
-THE CHERRY VENTURE -
For many years now I have taken a personal interest in the wreck of the ex-Cargo vessel , the "Cherry Venture."
On the following pages you will see my photographic history of this ship from the year 1973 to the present time. Using the buttons below, you can see many photos I have taken of the Cherry Venture in various stages of disrepair and gradual destruction due to the forces of salt water corrosion and the sea.
A Brief History
The Cargo vessel "Cherry Venture"
ran aground on the 8th.July, 1973, during cyclone conditions, with winds
up to 125 km per hour, and high seas.
The Cherry venture was built
in Gothenbert, Sweden in 1945, and was originally named the "Scania." After
that it was re-named the "Slott" and then the "Timur Venture." Eventually
being known as the "Cherry Venture." She measured 91.4 metres long, and
weighed 1625 Tonnes.
After she ran aground, a Gladstone-based
tug named the "William R.Golding" tried to free the ship, but to no avail.
It was privately purchased in October, 1973, with a view to refloat the
ship, and refit it as a luxury cruise vessel, with an on-board casino to
cruise around the Great Barrier Reef Islands. All attempts to refloat her
failed, and to this day she has remained in her sandy grave. Her
propeller weighed 4.5 tonnes, and seems to be the only survivor from the
wreck, holding no rust, due to the fact it was cast from solid Stainless
Steel. It was manufactured by Lloyds of London in April, 1945. I have been
visiting this site since 1974, and my photographs below show what the ravages
of sea and salt air corrosion can do over the years.
